Cognitive radio (CR) was invented to solve the problem of the scarcity of the radio electromagnetic spectrum, the fundamental thought of which is to improve the utilization of spectral resource. Spectrum sensing, one key technique in CR, plays a vital part in CR realization. In convention frequency-hopping communication system, a lot of error will be generated if frequencies have been interfered, and the information is difficult to recover. Introducing spectrum sensing technology into frequency-hopping system can get over the "blind hopping" weakness of conventional FH communication system, as well as increase utilization of the spectrum resources, reduce interference between radios while they are communicating, enhance the throughput of the wireless communication, so as to improve the performance of the system.On the base of the detail analysis of FH and CR, combining the adaptive spectrum sensing technology in CR with the FH, we design the frequency hopping system based on the CR. Meanwhile, the process and features in systems units have been discussed in detail, and the key technology on the system have been analyzed. The models of the frequency hopping system based on the CR and the conventional frequency hopping system have been given in MATLAB. Then, the simulation results have been given about the two systems with single-frequency interference, multi-frequency interference and the wide band jamming. By comparison, this article shows the bit error rate in FH system based on the CR is smaller than the conventional FH system under the same conditions. The architecture of FH system based on CR is proved to be feasible.
