In image coding field, efficiency is the prime aim of the researchers. The performance of image systems is judged in the following parameters:1, the quality of the recovered image, including objective parameters and subjective parameters;2, the compression rate, which is represented by the number of bits that used to restore a pixel of the image;3, the complexity, which is calculated by the amount of computation and memories in the implementation of the algorithm.In this paper, the SPIHT algorithm is carefully analyzed from principles to applications in engineering. The original work done in this paper is as follows:1, this paper proposed an improvement to the SPIHT algorithm without lists. Thisimprovement cut of the three lists which are used to store the coefficients and the coordinates of sets in the former algorithm. With this improvement, the efficiency of image compression has been improved.2, this paper adopted a RS channel coding. Further more, according to the characters ofthe image compression binary bits stream, a data format is proposed to improve the robustness of the image transmission.
