Utilizing biological principles to exploit fishlike (dolphin or tunny) control and propulsion technique is an up-and-coming field in the propulsion research, especially for making propulsion and control system more efficiently. One of the methods exploring the biomechanics of locomotion in fish is to analyze the relationship between locomotion and thrust performance and then to find the mechanism of control and propulsion through observation of fish locomotion. It is no doubt that the research is very important to Bionic Underwater Vehicle.In this thesis, we discuss the process of fish swimming experiment and analyze the result. Firstly, we do experiments in the flume and observe the fish swimming. Images of locomotion by different kinds of fish and in different velocity of flow are acquired to build an image database. Two parts are included in the experiment: capture images for tracking and distilling the characteristic images of locomotion; Secondly, track the marks locomotion on fish's body by software which compiled to obtain the data of locomotion, process the data and eliminate errors ,build math-model of locomotion then fit the data by Matlab Tools and show the arithmetic expression of locomotion; finally, distill the characteristic images of locomotion by program which is compiled by VC++, and chose skeleton map and curve of body to show periodic locomotion.Through the research and experiments, we can obtain a conclusion that the experiment is feasible to the research of mechanism of fish swimming, and it also can be used in other fields to measure locomotion.
