Terrain 3D visualization technology is a key technology in the Virtual Reality, 3D Geographic Information System field and so on. It has a wide application in the flight-simulators, 3D video games, electronic sand table etc. Because of the variety and complexity of the terrain, the information of real terrain is very large, current computer can not load all information at one time to build three-dimensional completely and complete real-time interactive operation.With the trunk of "theoretical basis - method research - application", the paper deep studies terrain database, vector data render in the 3D scene and Real-time scheduling technology. Base on the researches of DEM block, texture block, managed method of terrain data and pyramid model; the paper improves DEM and texture block principle and proposes a good method for terrain database organization principle, in which we assess to data is easy and fast.Think of vector data characteristics, proposes a method, which converts vector data to bitmap for building bitmap pyramid, to solve the question of vector data drawing in 3D scene. The paper adapts Object-oriented development method, implement terrain data real-time schedule method.Finally, based on the researches of technology theories above, combine with the requirement of forest fire prevention, a large-scale real-time 3D terrain mapping system for the forest fire prevention is designed and developed with the Managed DirectX 3D display technology. Well application effect of system practical running shows the above-methods are suitable for the large-scale real-time 3D terrain visualization.
