Traditional security system is mainly based on token or password. With the development of society, this system is becoming more fragile. To cope with this challenge, we look to biometrics and hope to enhance identity verification by using our body's physical character and behavior.A fingerprint is the pattern of ridges and valleys on the surface of a fingertip. Modern anatomy and statistics have proved that each individual has unique fingerprints and fingerprint doesn't change all the life time, i.e. fingerprint is steady and exclusive. As a primary biometric, fingerprint has been widely used in forensic, police and other security system and been studied by using pattern recognition technique firstly. Fingerprint identification has been the pronoun of biometrics in many situations.Automatic fingerprint identification system(AFIS)has integrated image processing, pattern recognition and database technique. Tracing back to 1960's when it's first introduced(is it right?),AFIS has been successful and still the hotspot in pattern recognition domain today after 40 years'development. Automated fingerprint identification system is convenient, high efficiency, security and reliability. It has been applied in many fields such as financial security, data encryption, electronical business and some, and will play a more and more important role in our life.Today, Fingerprint identification provides an effective way for personal identification.The development of Automatic Fingerprint Identification System(AFIS)is the requirement of modern information security.Now it has many products based on this technology,but because of the noise,skin elasticity of in the fingerprint image,the accuracy and speed of recognition is far from satisfactory to many practical circumstances, and many articles is not open for the commercial profit.An ideal fingerprint identification system is still a difficult task.This paper according to the processing flow of the The AFIS,clarify fingerprint characteristics and the principles of the fingerprint identification. processing procedures of Automatic fingerprint identification system consists of image enhancement,filtering using local ridge orientation,binarizing,thinning,minutiate extracting and minutiate matching.Each procedure is studied deeply and new processing techniques are porposed in many aspects.In the procedure of calculating the direction image,compare several arithmetic and implement.In this system ,the major contributions of the thesis are listed in the following:1. designing a new normalizing algorithm in gray image;2. extracting the new feature-drap line;3. propose a new method of searching the area of the core in the fingerprint image;4. porpose the class order based on the statistics.In the first section ,introduce the development of the biological identification.,comparing these methods in every step of this process ,and emphases on discussing the superiorities fingerprint identification.In section 2, study and analyse a series of algorithm of image re-processing, propose a new normalizing algorithm in gray image, extract the new feature-drap line according to the direction image.In section 3, introduce the minutiate extracting and minutiate matching. In section 4, discuss the model of non-linear deformation of the fingerprint image. In section 5, introduce the method of fingerprint classification. finally summarize the fingerprint identification system.Some aspects in this paper are creative, but they are still in the stage of experiment, the precision and performance should be improved, but they still have some value in study and application.
