Antenna is the crucial equipment of the radio application system. Planar antenna has small size, light weight and low profile. Because of all these characteristics, the planar antenna is easily to be integrated with circuits. In recent years, with the great development of manufacture workmanship of the antenna, the planar antenna has become a new star in many applications. This paper focuses on the design of planar microstrip antenna array for wireless local-area network(WLAN).This paper analyzes the broadband microstrip antenna technology firstly and presents an ultra wide-band antenna which utilizes U-slot on the circular patch to achieve band-notched character on the 5-GHz WLAN band (VSWR≥2). Then, a broadband planar monopole antenna operation on the 2.4-GHz band (2400-2484MHz) is presented. The simulated results show that the VSWR is 1.06 at 2.44GHz, the bandwidth (VSWR<2) is about 1.97GHz, the gain is about 2.5dB. But there are some blocks on the layout of feed network if using this antenna unit to construct antenna array. This paper also presents 1×2 omnidirectional planar folded dipole array antenna which to construct a 2×2 antenna array based on some reference literatures. The simulated results show that the impedance bandwidth ,determined from 10dB return loss, reaches 410MHz(2110-2520MHz), the return loss |S11| is 25.66dB at 2.4GHz, the gain is about 7dB and good omnidirectional radiation patterns in the azimuthal plane is obtained. The measured results of the actual antenna array meet the simulated results primarily.WLAN protocol IEEE 802.11b/g utilizes 2.4-GHz band and requestes high data velocity up to 54Mbps. Synchronously, antenna having omnidirectional radiation in the azimuthal plane and narrow-beamwidth radiation in the elevation plane is required to cover a large service area on the WLAN base station or access point applications. Printed microstrip antennas or arrays having large bandwidth, high gain and omnidirectional radiation pattern are very attractive in wireless communications. This paper utilizes omnidirectional planar folded dipole array antenna to comprise planar dipole antenna array with large bandwidth and high gain. The array can be used on the laptop and is easily fixed on the house or building, for example, which can hang on the outdoors or lanais, also stick on the top of the plane of the roofs, and is suitable for large quantities of integrated manufacture with little metal materials and low cost.
