Ceramics industry features traditional heavy laboring manufacture with weak information and automation infrastructure comparing with other industries. Recently, due to price rising of raw materials, cost increasing of man-power, lacking of energy resources and tax reclaiming-back decreasing etc, ceramics industry faces big change and instability. Such environment forces ceramics companies to comprehensively integrate all resources owned and develop enterprise information management so that potentialities can be uncovered, fast responses to customer and low running cost can come up, and as a result that the company can acqure long-lasting, continuous and fast development. This study analyses a lot of problems faced by ceramics industry, for example:①no accurate purchase plan and result in blindfold purchase and money spending;②no monitoring follow-up of all orders execution;③no dynamic supervising of materials flow for production;④difficult management and control of demand chain;⑤how to integrate all existing information system if deemed useful. The necessity and urgency of implementing an ERP system is presented in order to solve those problems. ERP is referred as a completely new and comprehensive enterprise resources planning system for management, technology and information, which can improve competence of a ceramics company and bring more chances together with challenges. Ceramics company should actively implement a right ERP to improve the competence and economic benefit. The worldwide famous ceramics manufacturer-Duravit went to China market in 2001, which is a big milestone for China ceramics development since it has a long history. Experts say Duravit China is a good example for local China ceramics companies. As far as ERP concerned in Duravit, called DIAS, its application and accommodation will be studied. Here 2 key issues are highlighted:①solutions to choose what kernel modules from DIAS and what localized modules from other information system (for instance: financial modules);②solutions to interface ERP with existing systems and share basic data, for example: computer aided system(CAS) and facility management system.During the process of systematic design, detailed solutions are presented, including:①BPR;②production data management;③finance module localization;④purchase management;⑤warehouse management;⑥barcode interfacing;⑦sales;⑧production task management;⑨cost calculation;⑩quality management;○11 equipment management. For some of those localized modules, if interfaces are needed, detailed analysis and coding are described.Take DIAS in Duravit as an example, a general description of normal methods and procedures to implement an ERP system in ceramics industry are presented. Procedures primarily involves:①make plan;②training;③requirement analysis;④solutions design;⑤interface programming;⑥simulation test;⑦system transfer;⑧running check. By the means of computer technology, No. 5 is analyzed and studied in details. Finance module is given as an example to show data flow chart, interfacing files and programming codes. Interfacing files are:①outside purchase entry;②finished goods entry;③sales invoices;④sales delivery;⑤raw materials and consumables delivery;⑥purchase invoices;⑦Others entry;⑧Others delivery. According to the analysis, methods and technologies to implement these interfaces in computer system are introduced, and then a part of detailed codes are given.Although there are a lot of difficulties for implementation of an ERP, especially in human resources, financial resources and material resources, the study on the application of DIAS in Duravit shows: the way to make scientific decisions, to adapt to real environment, not to seek fashionable GUI, but to pursue stability and efficiency, to choose kernel modules as well as localized modules, to code interfacing programs to integrate other existing applications, to go to effect step by step, and so on, will enable the success to implement an ERP in any traditional ceramics industry in a fast, highly efficient and economical way, thus the overall performance of a company will be improved.
