With the rapid development of broadband network, digital compression and massive storage technology, network service based on real-time multimedia communication has gained higher growth rate than ever before. Video surveillance using existing internet infrastructure has become one of the most appealing applications of real-time multimedia network service. This technology has been applied extensively to the fields of industry manufacture, traffic, electric power, intelligent buildings and etc. It has good prospect both in practice application and theory research.Traditional video surveillance system is usually used within a LAN of company or a campus, only supports a few users and restricted monitoring areas. There would be bottlenecks of bandwidth and processing capability in the traditional video surveillance system when it is widely used in the whole country where the number of users and monitoring areas increase greatly. This thesis introduces the idea of application layer multicast to the field of video surveillance. It solves the problem of traditional video surveillance system by importing the distributing server in the system. The thesis makes use of the related technologies of CDN and P2P which have been deeply researched to optimize the capability of the system and provides a valuable reference to the designation and realization of large scale video surveillance system. Firstly, this thesis describes the history and development of the video surveillance system; then, the key technologies of video distribute system: application layer multicast, CDN, NAT traversal and SIP protocol are introduced. After that, this thesis analyzes the system architecture of new video surveillance system and gives a realization scheme based on the idea of CDN and P2P. Then, the thesis gives a software implementation of the system, which can support both UDP and TCP transport modes. Finally, there is a capability test for this system.
