To meet the demand of developing small and multiple-purpose streak tube,an electrostatic streak tube with high temporal and spatial resolution is designed.The streak tube can be used for ultra-fast process diagnosis in laser physics,plasma physics, photochemistry,photobiology,and so on.Moreover,the streak tube can be developed into a 3-dimensional lidar imaging system based on multiple-slit mode.It can be used for 3D space information detection and high-velocity measurement.Based on the design structure and basic parameters of the streak tube,a large amount of electron transmitting trajectories are figured out by statistical method,and then the character parameters are calculated and analyzed according to the simulation result.Modulation transfer function(MTF) is used to estimate the temporal resolution and spatial resolution.The streak tube has a length of 196mm and a temporal resolution of 5ps.The sensitivity of deflection plate is 17.9μm/V and the sweep velocity is available from 9.9μm/ps to 179μm/ps.The dynamic spatial resolution of centre area of cathode is higher than 150lp/mm,and the diameter of effective cathode area is 20mm with minimum spatial resolution of 15lp/mm.Two technical factors which may affect the temporal and spatial characters of the streak tube are discussed.One is the rising and falling edge of circuit pulse when a gated voltage is applied to the grid for controlling detected light signals.The rising and falling edge can deteriorate both temporal and spatial capabilities of the streak tube and therefore they should be controlled strictly in narrow.The other is the position that deflection plate sets.The streak tube has optimal temporal resolution when deflection plate is set closely to the diaphragm of anode,while the optimal spatial resolution is realized when the deflection plate is set at the point with minimum electron beam diameter.In addition,any deviation of deflection plate from the center axis of streak tube can worsen the character index,so the deflection plate should be set as the center of deflection plate is completely overlapped with the center axis of streak tube.
