| As a kind of soft news, entertainment news is concise and simple. It can make people feel relaxed. It has become a necessary part of people's daily life. Entertainment news is accepted by people as the spice of life. Though entertainment news is more and more necessary, until now there has been very few systemic studies from the textual functional angle. This thesis is based on Halliday's thematic theory and Zhu Yongsheng's thematic progression pattern theory. The analysis is on the thematic structure of fifteen English and fifteen Chinese entertainment news reports from the famous newspapers (such as New York Times, People's Daily, etc.). According to the distribution, the author makes a comparison of the similarities and dissimilarities on thematic structure between English and Chinese entertainment news.According to the criteria of data collection, the author analyzes Theme, Rheme and thematic progression patterns in the thirty English and Chinese entertainment news reports, and analyzes similarities and dissimilarities between the materials of two different languages. The methodology refers to the quantitative and qualitative methods.According to the result, In English and Chinese entertainment news reports, simple Theme is used more often. In English entertainment news reports multiple Theme is used more than the other kinds of Theme except simple Theme. But in Chinese entertainment news reports clausal Theme is used more than other kinds of Theme except simple Theme. Some Chinese clauses have no Theme, but this phenomenon does not exist in English clauses of this kind of texts. In English entertainment news reports, the concentrated progression pattern and linear progression pattern occur more often than other patterns. In Chinese entertainment news reports, the parallel progression pattern occurs more often than other patterns, and the crossing progression pattern is not used very much in Chinese entertainment news reports. The similarities and dissimilarities of thematic structure are caused by the special characteristics of entertainment news reports and different thinking modes between Chinese people and westerners.The research is helpful for the learners to understand entertainment news reports, and it is helpful for the journalists to write this kind of news. The author also gives some significant enlightenment on further study of entertainment news reports and more information on knowing western thinking mode. |
