Edge detection, which is still unresolved well till now, is a basic content of image processing and computer vision, and is also the base of image segmentation and image understanding. Edge detection or in another name image segmentation, means to separate the meaningful object in the image from its background and isolate them from one to another according to their differing meanings. In another word edge detection is to extract objects bearing differing meanings from the image, which is an essential procedure of extracting image features in image recognition. The thesis begins with the concept of edge detection, and then discusses the application of differential operators to edge detection, analyzing the thought, the advantages and disadvantages of using differential operators. Subsequently explains the concept of binary morphology, analyzing various operation thoughts and applications of binary morphology, and associates it to make a research into the image edge detection. Finally by presenting instances achieves the realization of the programming procedure based on the MATLAB software, which attempts to attain a higher quality of image edge detection effect, and by using these practical examples proves the feasibility of proposed thought and method in the thesis.
