With the continuous developing of communication technology and the increasing complexity of its environment, Ethernet plays a more and more important role in people's lives. As the significant part of Ethernet, Ethernet switch has extensive applied foreground and huge development potential. Switch must have high reliability when it is used to provide user with the high-performance and high-capacity solution. In order to meet the high reliability requirements, this thesis brings forward a kind of implementation of diagnostic system for switch which is called as diagnostics framework, and according to this diagnostics framework, a series of diagnostics tests are also designed and developed. The paper mainly studies Ethernet switch's basic principle and systematic structure, based on the current diagnostics theory, this thesis brings forward the specific implementation for diagnostic function of the Ethernet switch, which is composed of diagnostics framework and a series of diagnostics tests. The diagnostics framework provides a lot of intelligent functions, which include the automatic registration and resolution of command line, single line card detection, boot-up diagnostics, scheduled diagnostics and so on. According to the different requirement for the diagnostics, based on the theory of diagnostics framework, the relevant algorithm is designed by the diagnostic developer, and then the implementation of a series of diagnostics tests can be completed. The diagnostic module which is designed in this paper can detach the diagnostic algorithm from general diagnostic process, so that, diagnostic developer can pay more attention to the implementation of diagnostic algorithm.
