For the merits of permanence, clear, precise, no contact with the material, and that can mark in the surface of a variety of materials and shapes, laser marking has been widely used in the manufacturing industry. The gray image marking has broad application prospects for its excellent performance. The key of gray image marking is digital halftone technology. This paper will introduce the principles of digital halftone technology in detail, and analysis several commonly used halftone methods, such as error diffusion, dithering, regional division and model method. Considering with Bayer dither matrix, this paper presents an improved model method, which can ease the grain effect produced by the model's concentration in original method. The combination of error diffusion and regional division makes the error diffusion based on special diffusion path, which can process image as fast as dithering and reach the effect of error diffusion nearly. This paper introduces the implementation of gray image laser marking system in detail. The precise control of the location and distance of marking spot make sure the accuracy of the marking images; the improvement of data's storage and access advance the system's efficiency and reduce the consumption of resources. The system's marking effect of gray image has achieved a high level. Because of the use of FM halftone algorithm, the system can be used widely for the laser marking machines that can not control the marking spot's size on real time. Therefore, this system is valuable for promotion. This paper is valuable for the upgrading of gray image marking industry. The products are in the process.
