With the widely usage of digital video encoding technology in more and more applications, the needs of application for high-quality video compression algorithm is increasing. People want to use the least bits expressing video images with certain quality to reduce the needs of transmission bands. Nowadays, the general and special DSP solutions, is one kinds of methods to meet it, It is so flexible, extendable, upgradeable and maintainable that can meet the needs of processing particular video format.The XVID coding technology is a highly effective encoding method based on the framework MPEG-4 Vedio standrd. This technology, using mature algorithm, has a prefect program structure which is good for transplant. The work interpreted in this paper is on the base of studying the XVID encoding codes.This thesis is intened to implementing and optimizating the MPEG-4 video encoder based on TMS32ODM642 DSP for real time video communication. In this paper, we emphatically study the core algorithm and the programs structure in the XVID encoder programs. And changed the present of the algorithm and the framework of the codes to match the architecture of hardware and optimized the DCT, the quantization module, the MAD module combined with the characteristic of DSP hardware. Finally, we used the standard testing sequences to value the performance of the video encoder.
