RS232 standard was developed by the Electronics Industry Association for data communications equipment in the early 1960s. Although a lot of other communication standards such as USB, 1394 and so on, had been developed since then, many of the new product are still equipped with RS232 interface due to RS232's simplicity of use. With the increasing popularity of network, managing equipment through network can improve efficiency. This paper describes how to realize a network serial port adapter in order to solve the problem of interconnection between PC and RS232 device using network. The serial port adapter realized by this design is a generic network intermediate device. This adapter is suitable for any device with RS232 interface which is desired to be connected to network.. As the realization of virtual serial port, conversion between network data and serial port data is left to virtual serial port driver allowing end users only need to use serial programming to achieve the goal of interconnecting PC and serial port device via network, greatly reducing the design difficulty of user software. This paper describes the way this network serial port adapter is designed. The design of the adapter consists of hardware and software. Based on the 8-bit MCU FS8610, hardware design realized a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet embedded device. Software design is composed of virtual serial port driver and firmware, which makes communication between virtual serial port drive and firmware available.
