Chinese character is a kind of ideogram which possesses a great amount of readers. Its distinctive characteristic has great impact on the research of the art and form of Chinese-character based books. This paper examines vision control in the dimension of Chinese character-based reading, with the attempt to find out the compositional pattern of visual elements, categorize visual symbols and analyze the"superposition"process of the visual elements in reading and explore the possibility of vision control. The book designer, who has a dual identity as the reader of the work and producer of the work in terms of visualization, maintains the communication between the writer and the reader through vision control. The dual identity requires the book designer to understand the complex results of book design. The relationship between the visual elements and their signified is indefinite. With throughout consideration of the influence of each sign, the designer may make the correct choice to purify the signified of the visual elements through superposition process. Only in this way can the designer avoid unconscious control in design, and actualize initiative control of visual expression. The first half of this paper proves the possibility of vision control with visual sign. The second half part applies the previous analysis in a case study, which is my book design and media design entitled Exchange View, to compare the attributes of Chinese character-based reading in different media. On one hand, the study on vision control in the dimension of Chinese character-based reading has abundant research materials. On the other hand, we have to faces the complex character system. This paper adopts semiotics as methodology, and propose the idea of achieving the purification of visual expression through vision control. This opens a new perspective for visual communication study, and the influence of Chinese-character-based reading on vision control would bring practical significance.
