GSM-R(GSM Railway), which was officially adopted by our Railway Ministry of China in late 2000, is an advanced railway-oriented wireless communication system from Europe. It is derived from the popular GSM with many railway-specific features added on. Due to the profound differences between China and Europe railway system, much localization is in need including network, cab radio, ground station and relevant equipments. However, we still do not have our own locally designed GSM-R handset for various reasons. This project aims to designing this GSM-R handset, which is functionally based on the common GSM mobile, complies with standard GSM-R specification and can satisfy current China railway's requirements.This product is a typical embedded system, ARM processor(SC32442), Linux and the embedded GUI environment, all make it a total difference from its peers. And the application software is designed according to experience from the previous GSM-R cab radio project.As only a part of the huge project, this paper will be mostly dwelling on the general solution and porting of the environment including both lower and upper development. Through certain comparison, we did type selecting for CPU, peripherals and other aspects including operating system. More emphases are laid on the porting and customization of Boot Loader, Linux kernel, Root filesystem and GUI envivironment. Also we got some ideas about the design of application softwares. Anyway, we are doing the software-hardware combined development, which is independent of application layer.
