Having a lot of advantages such as high conversion efficiency, excellent stability, high credibility, high quality beam, small volume and compact structure, diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSLs) have been widely applied in the fields of metrology, scientific research, and national defence and so on. Now DPSSLs have played an important role in the field of solid-state lasers. The sensing and measuring techniques using laser-diode (LD) end-pumped solid-state lasers have been studied in this thesis. According to the relationship between the laser output power and the longitudinal displacement of the LD converging beam spot, the displacement and vibration sensing schemes have been proposed and investigated theoretically and experimentally in this thesis. The main contents of the thesis are included as follows:At first, the development and applications of the DPSSLs are briefly described, and the fundamentals of the DPSSLs are introduced. The operating characteristics and structures of the DPSSLs are theoretically analyzed.Secondly, based on the mode matching between the LD pumping light and oscillating laser light, the dependence of the laser output power on the longitudinal displacement of the LD converging beam spot has been studied, and a LD-end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser system has been designed in which a lower output power of LD and a self-focusing lens are used.Thirdly, a displacement sensing and measuring scheme of is designed and investigated theoretically and experimentally which is based on a LD-end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser. The results indicate that when the LD pump power is 360mW, the measurement range, resolution and sensitivity of this solid-state laser sensor are±200μm, 5.68μm and 1.76mW/μm, respectively. Finally, a vibration sensing and measuring scheme based on LD-end-pumped solid-state laser is designed, and the feasibility analysis is performed. In a word, the LD-end-pumped solid-state laser sensors designed in this thesis are novel intensity modulated sensors which have a number of advantages of simple operation principle, compact structure and high resolution; therefore they will be found wide applications.
