The method of passive power filter (PPF) parameter design is profound studied in this paper. The configuration and working principle of PPF, as well as the characteristics of harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation at PCC point or in substation are analyzed. A new software is developed for harmonic analysis and suppression for substation based on a former software named"Simulation software of harmonic filter and reactive power compensation for distribution system". A new method of PPF parameter design based on NSGA-II, was proposed in the paper, which considering the filtering efficient, invest index, and reactive power compensation. Based on the GA toolbox in MATLAB, the filter parameter optimization program was developed. Using this program, the filter parameter optimization at PCC point or in substation can be realized conveniently. The simulation of optimal design and engineering design shows that multi-objective optimal design base on NAGA may result better harmonics suppression and economization, as well as the reactive power compensation, thus multi-objective parameter design is feasible.
