With the fast development of computer networks, video compressions and other related technologies, the study and applications of multimedia have gained more and more attentions. Now people can retrieve and utilize many kinds of information conveniently, including text, graph, cartoon, audio and video. Along with more and higher demands on multimedia quality, however, it has been an urgent problem to improve the quality of multimedia transmission in a limited bandwidth.By way of an important member of the multimedia, the applications of real-time video have become more and more common in society. Nevertheless, some application fields, like the security surveillance, demand for a higher quality of transmission. But the network based on TCP/IP protocol just provides the services of "making the best" , and the latency, bandwidth and packets loss rate can' t be guaranteed. This paper trys to improve the QoS of real-time video transmission based on the characteristics of real-time video and the current states of the IP network.After the analysis of the current real-time video transmission protocol (RTP), an improved real-time video transmission protocol IRTP (Improved Real-Time Protocol) is proposed. It is simple, easy; and some measures are appended to guarantee the video data correct and orderly. Thereby the QoS of video transmission is enhanced; it makes the video data to be transmitted highly efficiently and betimes. At the same time, an innovative reception algorithm about client is designed too. It can enhance the receiver' s speed and reduce the packets loss; therefore the QoS of transmission is increased.Finally, the simulation software about the acquisition and transmission of real-time video has been developed, and the hardware environment for the experiments is set. After some detailed contrastive experiments, the obtained results show that the QoS of video real-time transmission is really improved.
