ITU-T H.264/MPEG-4 Part10 AVC(H.264/AVC for short),which was established by Joint Video Team(JVT)consisting of experts from ITU-T's Video Coding Experts Group(VCEG)and ISO/IEC's Moving Picutre Experts Group (MPEG),is the new estinternational video coding standard,and contains many advanced video coding technologies and thoughts.Compared to those existing video coding standards,H.264 has made a big progress in coding efficiency,and a friendly interface of network and fault tolerance.But the advanced coding compression efficiency of H.264 make the computational complexity have a dramatic increase, compared to the simple profile of MPEG-4,its coding complexity have increased by 10 times,so it is necessary to optimize the algorithms of compression coding in order to improve the coding efficiency,especially in real time applications.First we introduce the basic theories and standards of video coding,and the background of home and abroad.Next we simply introduced the sturcutre of encoder and decoder,key technologies and main performance of H.264 standard,especially described on the main technology in video coding layer of H.264.Then we analyze the encoder's performance and computational complexity of H.264 indetail,and research deeply on the part of prediction mode selection which has a highly computational complexiyt.Finally,we completed three aspects of the work as follows in focus:Firstly, we analyze the fast Intra-Prediction method indetail.Secondly,In order to reduce the complexity,we proposed a Isotropic Sobel Operator Based Mode Decision algorithm, and it excludes massive useless intra-prediction modes and avoids many unnecessary computations about many costs.Experimental results show that without considering a little of performance degradation and bitrate increase,the encoding speeds up about 75%.
