The LCD display has already experienced several decades, but still has some drawbacks, and can't attain people's request. Such as, the problems of the viewing angle and the response speed, they are important and have to be resolved as soon as possible. In the last few years, the viewing angle has been improved, so the response speed has almost become the bottleneck in the development of LCD.In this thesis, we mainly studied the response time of VA liquid crystal cell with strong and weak surface anchoring. The rise time and the decay time of the cell with strong surface anchoring is deduced and is proportional to the square of cell gap. We also analyzed the response speed of the cell with weak anchoring, and obtained the analytical expressions of the anchoring energy's effect on liquid crystal response time using the effective cell gap and the surface dynamic equation methods. Our results show that the analytical expressionsτ0∝dx are all right for the cell with strong anchoring or weak anchoring. Inτ0∝dx, x is between one and two. At the last, two different methods were used to obtain the extrapolation length, and the corresponding response times which were compared and analyzed.
