H.264 is the most advanced encoding standard with the best efficiency in all video encoding standards. Nowadays, H.264 has many practical applications such as video storage, wireless communication and etc.Shot Boundary Detection is an important technology in many video applications. In recent years, many domestic and international scholars had a lot of research on it, however, the result on recall rate, accuracy rate and speed is not perfect. So, to improve the traditional methods, this paper combined the encoding characteristic of H.264 with the traditional methods and proposed a fast algorithm which can find abrupt change on H.264 video stream.In the algorithm, the reference frame's information of the B and P frame was used. The algorithm consists of two modules: B and P. The B module works in the video including B frame, and the P module works in the video including only P and I frame.Additionally, a new method used to find gradual change on video stream was also proposed. It depends mainly on two features on every frame's luminance variance: the one is that in the same shot, the difference of every frame's luminance variance is very little and the other one is that near the gradual change area, there exits a relatively flat area.Finally, the experiments proved the great efficiency of these algorithms.
