The Research Of Multimedia Information Retrieval Based On XML

With the speedy development of the Internet and the extensive application in the multimedia, the means of attaining multimedia has changed infinitely. And multimedia retrieval systems gradually come into being one of the major instruments on which different consumers depend when gaining multimedia information. At the present time, the two main methods of multimedia information retrieval--Text Based Retrieval and Content Based Retrieval, they have the inherent limitation: Text Based Retrieval has the lower recall rate and check-rate. The problem of Content Based Retrieval is the difficulties in the description of multimedia information, the extraction of the features, the synchronization technology of multimedia information and so on. Because of their inherent limitation, it induces that the effects of multimedia information retrieval can't meet the consumers' needs. And this situation should be resolved forwardly.As a markup language, XML, since it appeared, because of its proper excellence and characteristic, it has been used in all areas. Compared with SGML and HTML, XML inherits the characteristic of SGML, at the same time, it also has the flexibility and universality of HTML. Mainly the advantage of XML is: simpleness, structurization, nicer expansibility, interoperability, openness, the powerful link and so on. Therefore, we can have a chance to apply XML to the retrieval of multimedia information, and establish the system of multimedia information retrieval which is based on XML. Combining their advantage, it will resolve current problems, and meet the needs of consumers.According to this thought, after introducing the birth background of XML, firstly, this paper briefly introduces XML's advantage, characteristic, and its application in information retrieval included. Then the paper describes the two existing ways of multimedia retrieval, and it indicates their disadvantages. Secondly, the paper combines the description technique and query technique of XML with the multimedia retrieval, and it brings forward the retrieval of multimedia information retrieval which is based on XML in order to resolve the problem of the current multimedia retrieval. Thirdly, determine the nature, the paper attempts to found the evaluation system of multimedia information retrieval based on XML. In the end, the paper summaries the theory and practice instruction significance, analyses the reason for the unsolved problems, and provides the outlook for further study.
