Microwave pulse compression technology is an active research subject in the field of high power microwave study. High-Power Microwave pulse compression using helically corrugated waveguide can produce microwave at GW power level in X-band, and it has advantages of simple and compact structures, high power capacity and can work repeatedly.The dispersion property of the helically corrugated waveguide has been derived out based on the coupled mode theory, and modes coupled rules have been summarized. The eigen mode of the helically corrugated waveguide formation mechanism is pointed out. Using the electromagnetic field analysis software, the dispersion property of the helically corrugated waveguide was obtained through sweeping frequency according to the difference between the left and right handed polarized wave propagating in the waveguide. Based on the same principle, the dispersion property was also achieved by single-frequency method which can give spatial domain property of the field inside the helically corrugated waveguide. The dispersion curves obtained by the above three methods are in agreement within the range of allowable error.The modeling of the helically corrugated waveguide, helical taper and ellipse waveguide have been carried out. The pulse width and frequency modulating style are given. The process of the microwave pulse compression using Helically Corrugated Waveguide is simulated. And the software simulating gives the following results: input power 0.5MW, output power 3MW, power gain 6, input pulse width 70ns, output pulse width 3 nanoseconds.On the basis of the theoretical study and simulation results, optimizations of the input pulse and waveguide structure parameters were carried out. The optimized results of the input pulse is : power gain 6.25, output pulse width 2ns, output power 1.6MW, energy efficiency 41%. And the optimization of the waveguide structure parameters gives a significantly waveguide length reduction while maintain a high level power gain. The simulation results of the optimized structure parameters are as follows: the power and pulse width of the input pulse are 100MW and 120ns, respectively, while 800MW and 2.28ns for the output pulse.This work has some guiding meanings and reference values for the coming experiment study of the High-power Microwave pulse compression using helically corrugated waveguide.
