3-D modeling technology is widely used in many fields, such as architecture, medicine images, relic protecting, film-making and 3-D games. And 3-D models are usually represented as polygon meshes, by connecting the points on the surface of a model into polygons. This method is of great adaptability for polygon meshes could represent very complicated surfaces. Among all kinds of polygon meshes, triangle meshes are most popular.Based on a further study on 3-D mesh model compression algorithm, the following work has been accomplished.First, a predictive compression algorithm for geometry data of three-dimensional (3-D) mesh models is proposed in this paper. Each vertex position is predicted by exploiting the position in adjacent area and angle information in neighboring triangles. Hausdorff distance is adopted as the geometry error measure. The simulation results show that in rate-distortion performance the proposed algorithm outperforms the MPEG-4 standard for three-dimensional mesh model coding (3-DMC).In the following, we radically depart from the traditional approach to mesh compression and propose a scheme that incrementally encodes a mesh in the order it is given to the compressor using only minimal memory resources. This makes the compression process essentially transparent to the user and practically independent of the mesh size. This is especially beneficial for compressing large meshes, where previous approaches spend significant memory, disk, and I/O resources on pre-processing, whereas our scheme starts compressing after receiving the first few triangles. Finally, some new ideas for the development and research of 3-D mesh models are proposed at last.
