This paper is mainly focus on the synchronization issue of OFDMA technology and its application in cognitve radio system. Firstly, this paper introduces the concept and presents development of OFDM, and derives the basic principles of OFDMA. Then the frequency synchronization is studied. According to the differences between the uplink and downlink, this paper discusses the causes and influences of carrier frequency offset separately, and studies several commonly-used estimation algorithms in detail. Later the timing synchronization issue follows. Poly-phase code is refered, which is particularly suit for the uplink timing offset estimation. Finally, cognitive radio based on protocol IEEE 802.22 is introduced, and a proper synchronization algorithm according to the practical demands of software simulation platform is proposed. Simulation results by Matlab and C language show that the algorithm could provide effective synchronization in cognitive radio system.
