Firstly, the concept and history of wireless broadband access is introduced, and then the series of IEEE802.16 standards and the key technologies are discussed here. After that, the principle of OFDM and OFDMA is briefly presented and the advantages and disadvantages of them are investigated. According to the standard, the subcarrier assignment scheme and the system model of the OFDMA technology is introduced. We also provide the wireless mobile channel model. IEEE802.16e standard includes OFDM and OFDMA air interfaces. The convenient timing synchronization algorithms of OFDM are firstly analyzed and an improved algorithm based on PN sequence is proposed. The main idea and the structure of the improved algorithm can be applied in the standard and the simulation results are provided. OFDMA is the key technology of the standard and next generation network. In the end, the emphasis is focused on the fine timing synchronization schemes of OFDMA uplink system based on the standard. After analysis of the traditional timing synchronization scheme, an improved algorithm based on the scheme is proposed.
