Firstly, this paper introduces the current state and development of WiMAX and briefly introduces IEEE802.16e standard. Then the wireless channel model and the basic principles of two key techniques in the standard—Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing/Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDM/OFDMA) are presented. Timing synchronization includes synchronization for OFDM and OFDMA system in the IEEE802.16e standard. OFDM timing synchronization has been investigated widely, but the application for OFDMA needs to be further studied. A solution to OFDMA uplink jointing coarse and fine timing synchronization is proposed. Then the traditional solutions to OFDM synchronization are summarized. Based on analysis of T.M. Schmidl arithmetic, an improved scheme is given, which can be applied in synchronization of OFDM, OFDMA downlink and coarse synchronization of OFDMA uplink. Finally, the emphasis is focused on the analysis of fine timing synchronization of OFDMA uplink. After analyzing the present arithmetic, a practical OFDMA fine timing synchronization scheme is proposed, followed by the computer simulation and the performance analysis.
