H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard of ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group. By adopting a number of novel coding techniques, H.264/AVC has enhanced compression performance and provision of a"network-friendly"video representation addressing"conversational"(video telephony) and"nonconversational"(storage, broadcast or streaming) applications related to the existed standards. Blackfin533 is a new multimedia chip for the H.264/AVC and MPEG-4. Therefore, the study of the combination of the H.264/AVC and embedded system based on the Blackfin533 is important for the application of H.264/AVC. After the flourish of desk operating system, the embedded system is now under the greatest development. Now it plays an important role in many fields, such as industry, military affairs, communications, transportation, finance, medical treatment, weather, agriculture and so on. According to the request proposed by the target system, how to choose a proper embedded processor to build an appropriate embedded system has become a very important subject. In this thesis, the new techniques in H.264/AVC are firstly discussed, and advantages of the new standard are proved by experiments. Secondly, the most important module in H.264/AVC——motion estimation is discussed. The thesis presents a fast algorithm based on highly correlation of motion estimation cost and motion vector direction for H.264/AVC. The results show that the new algorithm achieves speedup with negligible PSNR drop. Thirdly, the author learns the structure, the bus, the management of memory, management of the cache of the Blackfin533, studied the Instruction Set of the Blackfin533, the structure of program and video instruction. Also, the author studies the structure and theory of the ADSP-BF533 EZ-KIT LITE evaluation board. Fourthly, the author makes reserch on H.264/AVC by using the evaluation board above as plat. Fifthly, the author builds a lib of encoder functions of H.264/AVC and makes optimization for it. The thesis lays sound foundation for the future establishment of multimedia lib which contains both audio and video compression standard. Finally, the author designs an embedded system called the Measuring System of Audio Signal Distortion and SINAD.
