With its unique advantages and potentials, the technology of wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been identified as one of the most important technologies in the 21st century. In many applications of sensor networks, the sensors are used to trace and localize the target in a given area, for instance in the application of disaster relief, the sensor networks are used to localize the medical staff; moreover, in the protected area, the sensor networks are used to detect and trace the intruders. Therefore, the target localization in sensor networks has high value in the military use and civil use. Since the limited energy of the sensors and the weak processing capability, it is significant to design an alogorithm with low complexity as well as high efficiency. This paper mainly focuses on the target localization in sensor networks. First of all, the research significance and research status of target localization are presented; then, the typical single-target localization algorithms in WSN are introduced including their advantages and unsettled issues. Moreover, this paper introduces an energy-aware single target localization, which has high efficiency in energy consuming. Then, a new multiple-target localization algorithm in which the targets can not be classified was introduced. This algorithm has precise localization and high efficiency in energy consuming. Finally, a new multiple-target localization algorithm based on probabilistic weighting was proposed via the previous study. This is a range-free and concurrent algorithm, which can concurrently localize multiple targets in the detecting area without complicated range-measuring device. The simulation result proves the efficiency of the proposed multiple-target localization algorithm. It shows the algorithm has a high precision; Moreover, it has adjustable ability in precision without the increase of the sensor nodes.
