The technique of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction from medical ultrasonic images plays an important role in modern clinical application. The 3D structure of the tissue can be realistically displayed on computer CRT by 3D ultrasonic reconstruction system, which processes traditional two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonic images. Via man-machine interaction, the doctor can manipulate the 3D structure freely such as rotating, zooming out, zooming in, etc. It provides clinical doctors spatial distribution of diseased part and its surroundings in a more comprehensive way, so as to help them make exact clinical diagnosis. In this paper, with an overview of the key problems and development of 3D ultrasonic imaging, the demands and technique feasibility of 3D reconstruction from medical images have been investigated, and the application of medical image processing technique in medical diagnosis have been discussed. Then, the paper expatiated the manner of 3D ultrasound data acquisition, discussed the orientation manner and scanning ways in freehand system, doing research on certain method of 3D ultrasound data acquisition and software disposal scheme with Shantou Ultrasound Institute. After that, the paper put forward the processing method of 3D ultrasound data, included some kinds of filtering and interpolating methods, meanwhile, the paper also discussed the latest new Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) technology, and use GPU on the process of 3D ultrasound data. Then, the paper talked about the volume rendering technology, using GPU on that area, and set out the operation effect of the visualization software. Then, the paper did some experimentation using the GPU technology which is mentioned before. After comparing the experimentation results, we get the conclusion that GPU can make the software run more quickly and efficiently because of its ability of parallel computing and quickly texture rendering. Finally, a conclusion of this paper is presented, followed by some suggestion on further research work.
