Grid computing aims to achieve coordinated resource-sharing and problem-solving across distributed domains. Interactive grid enables various collaborative applications, in which activities involve geographically distributed and heterogeneous resources, to work together to achieve a common goal.Activities of collaborative applications in interactive grids involves geographically distributed and heterogeneous resources such as computational systems, scientific instruments, databases, sensors, software components, networks, and people, so coordination between these resources for collaborative applications becomes an important issue that need to be solved.Software support to facilitate coordination between these entities is needed. A session management framework for collaborative applications in interactive grid is introduced, and its'mechanisms includes session control service, session coordination policy management and coordination control service etc.A scalable and flexible software architecture based on OGSA is presented, which can adapt to the dynamism of grid resources. The software architecture supports grid resource and session management service monitoring, grid manager can use these information to take dynamic management to these grid services and resources. Also, the mechanism of fault-tolerance is provisioned in this session management system. Finally, using this architecture, a prototype of session management is implemented on the basis of Globus Toolkit 3.0, to support collaborative application: CoGIS. And then an evaluation of session management is given. The experiments show that the session management system can support COGIS well. The mechanisms are practical and effective to support collaborative application. Second, the software architecture can improve the reliability, interoperability and flexibility of system.
