The technology of Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) is a meaningful subject in computer vision. It has a lot of applications in many fields such as target tracking, automaton navigation, assistant driving, early warning, etc. Because of many advantages of IR imaging possesses , the technology of Automatic Target Recognition based on Infrared Image sequences has become the trend and direction for current development and study of tracking technologies worldwide.In this paper, we study the relevant technology of design and realization of real time IR ATR system. The main achievements of this paper are as follows: The techniques of real time IR ATR system are discussed and studied principally. A real time IR ATR system based on Multi-DSP+FPGA+ASIC is designed and realized. It works stably and can detect and track some typical targets both on ground and in sea.A logic structure of FPGA with registers unit as control kernel is proposed after studying the logic structure of FPGA of real time IR ATR system. DSP system can realize the redressal of the logic function of FPGA by configuring the registers. It can meet the demands of the DSP algorithm. Consequently the flexibility of the system has been enhanced greatly.A technique of the contrast linear enhancing algorithm of Infrared Image sequences is discussed and studied. An algorithm of image linear enhancing based on the multi-level averages is proposed. Results of the experiments prove that the method is an applicable method for contrast enhancement and can be easily realized by FPGA. It can select the reasonable parameters of image liner enhancing adaptively according to the image in order to realize the linear contrast enhancement of the images.The techniques of standard PAL television system display controlled by parameters as well as dynamic characters display are discussed and studied. The technique of image display controlled by parameters is adopted. It can adapt the display of different size image and control the display place of the image in the screen. Also it can display certain rectangle image selected in the image. Meanwhile a method of dynamic character display based on FPGA is proposed, which adopts the strategy that dot matrix sets are stored in FPGA, and character images and display logic of standard television system are fulfilled by the logic resource of FPGA, so that dynamic character display is realized.
