Different from traditional wireless communication networks, the data-centric and energy-constrained features of WSNs(wireless sensor networks) bring many challenges for data querying technologies. Holding the features of energy efficiency, fault tolerance and good-scalability, mobile agent based querying method is especially applicable to WSNs.Mobile agents are special processes that can migrate across sensors to gather and deal with data. Middleware method has been used to hide node's hardware details, support agent to run between nodes and offer a language to develop agents. From now on, every agent's code must be written by hand, so it is easy to make mistakes and cost a lot of time. This is one reason why agent based query method has not been used widely in WSNs. Another reason is that using agents can result in a lot of redundant energy consumption for its code must be translated. To address the problems listed above, we have proposed a mobile agent based intelligent query system (MAIQS). In this system, production rule system is used in query's optimization and agent's production for the first time in WSNs. Application-related knowledge and history information is described in the form of rules and facts which are the foundation of reasoning. What's more, query automatism is implemented in this system. When a user input a query description ,the system translate it into standard form. Next , reasoning mechanisms and other strategy are used to optimize agent's routine, reduce agent's redundant function code and product agent. Agents will do the remained works to complete this query. At last, we implement the system based on Agilla, which is a middleware system for WSNs, to inspect a room's temperature. Experimental and mathematic analysis results show that MAIQS is convenient, high-resilient and in low energy consumption.
