High-power microwave effects on electronic systems are an important research issue because computers and their networks are widely used in industrial and military areas. The work of present thesis focuses on the high-power microwave effects on the computers and their networks, and gives theoretical and experimental results for understanding the mechanisms of the interaction between the high-power microwaves and the computers and their networks.A simple theoretical model based on plasma physics is presented to analyze the microwave plasma effects on the electronic circuits. Results show that under certain parameter conditions the threshold for damaging the electronic circuits decreases with the decrease of the frequency of the high-power microwave. In addition, the oscillation amplitudes of the plasma electrons increase dramatically when the plasma frequency is near the high-power microwave frequency, which can easily damage the electronic circuits. The experiment was also carried out for investigating the high-power microwave effects on the computers, and the results show that the threshold for damaging the computers increases with the high-power microwave frequency, which is in good agreement with the result of the theoretical model.Experiment of high-power microwave effects on computer network including 10 computers was also carried out for understanding the interaction mechanism. The results show that the threshold for damaging computer network is the same order as the threshold for damaging the single computers. In was also demonstrated that the probability for damaging the computer network by the high-power microwave increases with the power density of microwave.An analysis and summary are presented for understanding the mechanisms of high-power microwave effects based on the theory given by other researchers. The analysis and summary focus on the high-power microwave effects on the semiconductor devices, integrate circuits, resistor, capacitors, and memorizer, which is of interest to the area of high-power microwaves.
