With the development and popularization of information and computer technology,how to input the useful characters to the computer has become a key problem in the modern information processing field.Nowadays,the OCR(Optical Characters Recognition) technology is the best choice to input the characters automatically,and the scanner is ofen selected to be the image scanning tool.Based on the studying of embedded computer techonology, a portable system has been designed, which can Real-timely capture the video of characters instead of the traditional scanner, redraw the image of characters by a series of video processing and recognize it by using the mature OCR technology .The main work which has been achieved in this dissertation is as follow:Firstly,based on an ARM microprocessor which is designed for video processing , a portable video capturing system is designed,which has some characters such as smart and portability on hardware and Real-time performance on software. And the CMOS image senor driver and the USB Device driver in Real-time Linux Operating System have been designed.Secondly,after binarized every frame ,the video stream is compressed in a method based on RLE(Run-Length encoded). And the panoramas is made from video sequence and the static image of characters is redrawed.Thirdly, an application software on PC has been designed, which can accomplish the recognition of characters.It includes the design of the USB driver,the method of calling on two different OCR module and the design of the whole software.In a word, this dissertation implements a portable system which can input characters automatically and has gained satisfying recognition rate.
