Key management is central to cryptosystems. The public-key cryptosystem is just introduced to solve the problems in key management. Because all encryption technology relies on secret keys, key management, which is a complex issue itself, is the key point to ensure the security. In the whole process of key management, key agreement has very special significance. In this paper, the existing tripartite key agreement protocols are studied, the relationship between the security of the protocol and the expression of the session key is researched, that no secure tripartite key agreement protocol can be constructed only by adding long-term keys is proved, and a tripartite key agreement protocol based on digital certification is proposed. Then the existing identity-based key agreement protocols are studied, the protocols are separated into some basic protocols, the security of each basic protocol is pointed out, a secure and efficient key agreement protocol is proposed by combining two basic protocols. Because all identity-based key agreement protocols need to trust the center authority, a self-certified key agreement protocol, which need not trust center authority, is proposed. At last, some applications of bilinear pairing in hierarchical key management are researched. Because all exiting hierarchical key management protocols need a secure channel in key generation and dynamic key management process, two hierarchical key management protocols, which do not require secure channels, are proposed. The dynamic key management algorithms of the key management protocols are also researched.
