solid-state laser with High-power, high-beam quality have important applications in materials processing and scientific research because of its output energy, high peak power, the device compact and easy fiber coupling transmission, long life and other reasons. However, if use the stable resonator, high output power and high beam quality often can not be got at the same time, which constrain the development of high-power laser. The emergence of unstable resonator is a better solution, which enables a single-mode operation of the entire medium size, and good beam quality.In this paper we conduct in-depth research and experimental measurement to unstable resonator with VRM as its output mirror for improving laser operating characteristics, the output power and improving the beam quality. This paper analysis the stable conditions of resonator firstly and gets the stable area of resonator. Then we give a more comprehensive overview of the unstable resonator design principle and structure characteristics and analysis the relationship between structural parameters of the unstable resonator. We research the issue of heat effect in the laser medium, analysis the work of substances, pump source, the cause of thermal lens which has an important impact on solid-state laser medium heat effect. And measure the thermal focal length of the material on the work in certain input power and output power. Design specific parameters of the resonator according to the basis of material thermal focal length. Then assemble a set of lasers by theory for experiments. Measure the unstable resonator output beam quality and laser efficiency then analyzed the measurement results. The results have very important reference significance for the unstable resonator design of the high-power solid-state laser.
