In this paper,the object of research is folding high rate electro-optic modulator,which is the one of key units of space optical communication.Based on the theory of transverse electro-optic effect of LiNbO3,starting from the realistic requirement of the transmitting system of free-space laser communication.We provided the general designation of folding high rate LiNbO3 electro-optic modulator.The key technologies which conclude the designation of electro-optic crystal cell,confirmation of quiescent operation point and the system of beam shape is deeply researched.To meeting the applying requirement of space optical communication,we designed and realized the miniaturization of mechanical structure for electro-optic modulator.At length,We successfully devised the folding high rate LiNbO3 electro-optic modulator,which output power is 150mW,the modulate rate is 120Mbps,the bit error is 10-6,and has the ability of transmitted speech and image information for a long time.Also,we have built the experiment and test system of folding high rate LiNbO3 electro-optic modulator.The output power and signal transmitted ability of folding high rate LiNbO3 electro-optic modulator have been tested,finally analysis of the result of the experiment.
