From the beginning of development in 1950's, CAD technology has got a quite great progress. There are two main trend of CAD technology, which is 3D modeling technology and CAD/CAPP/CAM/CAE integration. In the 3D design of part, CAD technology has relatively been completed and matured after years of developing. But there is still no successful example in the application of 3D technology and CAD/CAPP/CAM/CAE integration in the design of port machines which have their own characteristic. According to this situation, the paper brings forward a kind of 3D design method for port machine structure, and creates a 3D model data center which is with the help of database system to manage all the 3D models. This 3D model data center can provide the necessary information for the interaction between the analysis in CAE and the modification in CAD and the process of CAM, CAPP and so on, which can integrate the whole process of design and manufacture.This paper mainly expounds the method of the application of 3D modeling design in the port machine construe and with the help of database management system, the creation of a data center to manage the parts of port machine, which can realize the integration of CAD/CAPP/CAM/CAE in the design of port machine. As the limitation of the length and time, the part of CAE analysis in the whole design system will be completed by others.The main jobs of this paper are as following:1. According to the key points of the application of 3D modeling technology in the port machine, the paper expounds a kind of design method including departing of the whole model 'from top to bottom' and assembling the parts 'from bottom to top' and parameterizes the models.2. Creating a data center for port machine design with the help of database management system. In the data center, the general database will include data tables for the general parts in almost all the port machines and the specific database will include data tables for all the parts of a specific port machine. All of this information will be used in the analysis of CAE, modification of CAD models, CAM,. CAPP and so on.3. According to the requirements in creating the 3D parameterized model and data center, the paper analyzes all the technologies involved and expounds the way to realize this design method focusing on the key points in those technologies.4. Expounding the solutions for those difficulties in design through example.5. The paper explains the way to creating 2D engineering draws directly from 3D models and proves its possibility through port machine example.The paper systematically describes the application of 3D modeling in the design of port machine and the realization of part model data center and it also does a deep research for the key points of the application. As the research for the port machine's 3D design, the paper has done the pioneering and exploratory job for further port machine design and manufacture and also for the integration of CAD/CAPP/CAM/CAE. It fills the deficiency in this kind of research.
