In modern society, there is abundant information available. When fully enjoying the advantages that information brings up, we are puzzled about how to choose what we really need out of the flood of information. Sometimes, we do make choices, but we are still so anxious, for we don't know whether or when we can finish reading the news and information we have chosen. Sometimes, it is almost impossible to read some badly-organized newspapers etc. Therefore, it is necessary to work on the issue of legibility. The study on legibility can help us to learn the basic rules that make it easier to read newspapers, and internet pages. And finally, it helps us to take in the information on newspapers, and computer screens effectively.Generally speaking, we have three kinds of visual vocabularies used to strengthen legibility: visual vocabularies on the micro level, visual vocabularies on the mid-level, and visual vocabularies on the macro level. Each includes three categories: visual modification of words, visual modification of space, and visual modification of signs and symbols. We can list the visual words, highlight some, and we emphasize the importance of clarity and briefness of visual language. Also, we try to create particular tone and atmosphere, such as formal or informal, casual or serious atmosphere. Finally, we try to make the contents stylistic either in the newspapers, or on the internet. That is to say, certain styles are helpful to make the relevant contents more legible. We usually use these visual vocabularies to fit in three policies. Firstly, the use of the visional words should echo readers' and audience's mentality when they look at and read things. Secondly, we should make research on the information that readers want to get out of their reading, as well as the goals that information-senders want to achieve. Thirdly, the use of the visional words should match certain contexts.
