Real-time image transmission is a key discipline for a lot of applications like computer vision and image processing. In image processing applications with huge data, if the processing algorithms are fast enough, then the image transmitting system, which provides images to the processing unit, must be real-time to make the processing unit not idle. The transmitting card, whose role is to take the images to the processing unit, is an important device in a transmitting system. Generally, PC is selected as the image storage, and the image processing devices are the external hardwares of the PC, like PCI card, USB card, etc. As the bridge of the PC and the external hardwares, drivers play a critical role in the efficiency of the transmitting. As a result, a well-writen driver will make the transmitting real time possible, or the transmitting speed will be slowed down. This paper conducted researched on the efiicient implementation of the drivers under two nowerdays dominant operating systems, Linux and Windows. And a cross-platform application is developed using Java. This image transmitting system is based on PC, including the hardware part and the software part.It is capable of transmitting various data files, not limited to images. The source of the data comes from the PC's hard disk and the data is acquired from camera or some programs. This research gives some details about the efficient implementation of the driver for the image transmitting card under two operating systems, including Linux and Windows. And a way to create a cross-platform application is introduced using Java.
