The work described in this paper is under the project "Wavelength conversion and clock recovery subject to semiconductor laser with optical injection" which is financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.The clock recovery of individual channel is necessary and important in the optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) system, but the effective recovery is a difficult thing. The clock recovery using semiconductor laser exhibits a rather large application potential, due to the simple structure and large tolerance to the repetition frequency. In this paper, we have studied in detail clock division of semiconductor laser with external optical injection and get some valuable results. The main works are summarized as follows:1. Several optical clock recovery and clock division methods have been described and compared, and the scheme of clock division with semiconductor laser exhibits large application potential.2. The period doubling by using gain-switched semiconductor laser has been studied in experiment. The influences of DC bias, injection power, resonance frequency and modulated frequency to the period doubling of the laser diodes have been analyzed.3. The unique character of period doubling of multiple quantum well lasers has been studied experimentally with direct modulation. The results indicate that the material and structure of laser diode determine its multiple resonance peaks in the noise spectra, and lead to different period doubling with multiple modulation frequencies under the same bias current.4. We have simulated the time series, optical spectrum and power spectrum of output light from semiconductor laser by the coupled rate-equation modes, and studied a series of periodic oscillations and occurrence process of two periodic oscillations in laser cavity.5. We have presented the theory about the clock division of semiconductor laser with external optical pulse injection, and analyzed in detail it by numerical simulation.6. The clock division of optical pulses with adjustable repetition rate has obtained by the Fabry-Perot laser diode injected by external optical pulse in experiment. We have studied several critical factors to clock division by experiment and theory, and verified the experimental results by numerical simulation.
