The implementation of the Ethernet MAC is based on the IEEE standard 802.3.This paper first introduces the protocols of Media Access Control layer and thenfocuses on the design, realization and simulation of the major functions in theseprotocols.Top-down design method is used in this project. The primary function of MACis divided into three blocks, data receiving, data transmiting and flow control and theinter block relationship is descripted. Each block is then sub-divided. At the end, theresult is verified by simulation. The top module has four sub modules; they are receiving module, transmittingmodule, control module and status module. The receiving module deals with thedetection of preamble and the SFC and checks the destination address in the incomingframe. The transmitting module focuses on the realization of the CSMA/CD protocol. The control module is in charge of the flow control when the MAC is working infull-duplex mode. The status module stores the MAC status. Verilog HDL is used forfunctioning description, Xilinx ISE 6.0 is used for synthesis while ModelSim SE 6.1f.is used in waveform simulation. This paper also descripes the giga-bit ethernet and 10 giga-bit ethernet. It willbe the base of further research.
