Generation of photo-realistic images of virtual nature scenes is a challenging topic in computer graphics. As a very important part of natural scenery, realistic rendering of terrain has gradually attracted much attention. This paper proposes a model based on three-demension(3D) fractal terrain, and uses hardware-supported real-time rendering tehniques to produce realistic scene, and realizes the effect of virtual walkthrough. This paper focuses on the theoretical and methodological studies in the sevreal subtopics: fracatl terrain simulation, 3D photo-realistic terain rendering, programmable graphics hardware technique and virtual walkthrough. These studies are based on some interisplines such as 3D computer graphics, computer geometry, scientific computation visualization, virtual reality, and virtual reality.During the setup of the model of terrain, it is systematically studied and carried out using fractal Brown motion method. For the fractal terain simulation, the diamond-square"algorithm based on random midpoint displacement is given in detail, and the model is analyzed and optimized.Based on OpenGL library and its work principle, the process of 3D photo-realistic terrain is analyzed at length. During the realization of the terrain rendering, some methods are presented to improve rendering effects and to speed up graphic display ,based on the programmable graphics hardware. Finall it uses the method of terrain following to realize the virtual walkthrough, and to make the 3D terrain has good users interactive function, meeting the construction of virtual scences.
