Visualization in scientific computing (VISC) is a kind of newly developed subject in the 1980s. It is based on Computer Graphics and Image manipulation technology, and the calculation result will be changed graphics image, which is displayed on the screen for interactive processing. It greatly improves the process speed and quality of calculated data, and realizes the modernization of scientific tool and environment .Via computer graphics techniques, it transforms data produced by scientific computing into geometric graphics or images so that they can be displayed on screens and be manipulated interactively. Now VISC has become a strong tool for the discovery and understanding of many scientific phenomena, and regarded the second computer revolutionary.Line Integral Convolution is a texture based method in 2D vector field. It can fully disclose the relativity among every spot of the vector field. In addition, the method relates to spot noise, filter, convolution, render and texture mapping. Even in the vector direction changing sharply fields, the method can show the direction of the vector field well, and display details of the vector field better. The image generated by this method takes on continuity and fine. So the method has a fairly good prospect.The LIC-based method is a usually used method for vector field visualization. Though the theory of LIC has been somewhat perfect, its applied research still has been developed and renovated. Three aspects,vector field visualization based LIC, FastLIC, improved LIC have been researched in the paper. Based on the analysis in these research actualities, some algorithms and ideas have been proposed and the relevant test result and analysis have been given. The main research contents are as follows.LIC and FastLIC algorithm are introduced, based on the difference between triangular filter kernels and box filter kernels, we have visualization experimentations using Line Integral Convolution with triangular filter kernels as well as with box filter kernels, Although the former has a satisfactory result ,it is not faster than the approach with box filter kernels, In addition, we analyze the reasons to get the result also.Line Integral Convolution (LIC) is a powerful technique for vector field visualization. Introduced in 1993, the method has been used rapidly in many application areas, ranging from computer arts to scientific visualization. In the visualization process of LIC, the streamline tracing is a very important step, traditionally, the Euler method is often used in calculating streamline tracing, but it requires more computations and often gets emanative Integral results. In the paper, depending on the emanative degree of vector field, in order to alter the Integral length automatically, we use a method of variational Integral length to trace vector field. The experimentations indicate that the improved method produce satisfactory results.
