Image engineering is a subject that has been developed in recent years, and it has many contents. According to the degree of abstract and the investigate methods, the research on it can be divided into three levels: image processing, image analysis and image comprehension.Image segmentation is a critical image analysis technique. It is necessary in the process of image object's extraction and measurement. The result of the image segmentation is the basis of the feature extraction and pattern recognition. The research of the image segmentation is the hot spot and focus of the image technology. This paper makes the study of and implements the image segmentation.At first, a new approach to the edge detection, combination sequence_point_filter and multiscale tracing, is proposed. In edge detection of the sequence_point_filter, reliable edges are found out. And on the base of which, multiscale tracing is carried through, and the broken_edge problems are solved. After that, more suitable and proper edges are produced. Results show that the proposed approach generates more proper and better_quality edges than the others,and has good performance of resisting noise.Watershed algorithm is all automatic segmentation scheme to generate closed outlines, which might give rise to over-segmentation,i.e.,numerous small segmented closed regions that blur the target contours or shapes.In order to resolve to the problem, the method based on the application of the Fuzzy C-means algorithm together with composition of fuzzy relations is proposed. Use the three fuzzy relations which defined by the performance of fuzzy set theory to group together similar regions and to overcome the over-segmentation efficiently. The experimental results validate its good performances of the method.
