The development of high power diode laser is so fast that the out put power of bar can up to 100W, it is possible make the high power diode laser (HPDL) as a tool in industrial materials processing. As a advantage of small size, light weight, easy structure, high efficiency, HPDL has a more wider application than traditional lasers. In Europe and USA, HPDL in industrial material processing is researched mainly on material join, surface hardening, cladding and engineering material surface processing, there are less research on HPDL in material processing in our nation.In this paper, it had introduced the principle of diode laser emission, and then make a generational introduce of high power diode stack, the light combine by using a polarizing prism, this is kind of non-coherent method to get higher power output, and the energy intensity can be fit for material processing. And the tell the collimation and focus of light out put from prism, the beam energy intensity was measured in different position, and fit the curve of light after focusing in focus point 10mm range in fast axis, calculate the beam product parameter of fast axis.Considering the optics feathers and problems in material processing of HPDL, a processing head was developed with AutoCAD and Solidworks, it was show that the processing head can protect the lens of HPDL, cooling itself, and improve the quality of materials processing. The rectangle beam is very fit to surface processing, there are experiments was done with HPDL, including the surface hardening of U74 rail way steel and surface cladding Ni60 power on A3 steel and U74 rail way steel, and get the conclusion that there are different between fast axis and slow axis in scan direction, and HPDL can get a wider surface hardening and cladding track, and it can improve the efficiency in materials surface processing.
