High power diode lasers have many advantages. For example, small size, high efficiency, low cost, long service life and high metal absorption rate. It often used in the field of metal surface processing. However, the high power diode lasers have the drawback of poor beam quality and low output power. In order to meet the requirements of high power, high beam quality, first of all, we used the method of beam collimation, compressed the fast divergence angle of single laser stack. And then used the laser combining technology to increase the output power of the system. Finally, to improve the reliability of the system, optimized the source mechanical module design. After the completion of these work, the laser system output power reached 5120 W, the focus spot size is 2 mm×16 mm. Use the laser source for laser surface processing experiment, the results show that after laser hardening, 35 CrMo alloy structure steel surface hardness can be increased to more than 55 HRC. And found that use Ni28 + 30% WC powder as the cladding material can get the best surface performance on 304 stainless steel ball valves.
